New wave of panic buying hits grooming supply and hair dye shelves

On Friday, April 10, Walmart’s CEO Doug McMillon told hosts on the “Today Show” that Americans are increasingly purchasing beard trimmers and hair clippers. They’re also panic-buying hair dye in bulk. Over the past several weeks, people have been stocking up on overall groceries, baking supplies, hand sanitizer, disinfectants and toilet paper:
“People are starting to need a haircut. You see more beard trimmers and hair color and things like that. It’s interesting to watch the dynamic play out.”
Many states have closed barber shops and hair salons because of the high risk of SARS-CoV-2 spreading during face-to-face and physical interactions. As a result, many people have discovered that they must learn to cut and dye their own hair.
McMillon also observed an increase in education and entertainment purchases, including games and puzzles.
Other stores, media outlets and marketing and data firms have observed a similar pattern since March: The Nielsen Corporation does more than collect data about the viewing habits of film and television show viewers. Nielsen has also collected consumer shopping habits data. As CNN reported, Nielsen found, when comparing consumer shopping habits in 2020 to 2019, that hair clipper purchases increased by 166 percent this year. Hair dye purchases increased by 23 percent.
