New Orleans embraced Mardi Gras Day on March 4, 2025, with colorful costumes, lively parades, and rich traditions, despite looming thunderstorms and high winds.
Revelers gathered in historic Treme, where the North Side Skull and Bone Gang upheld its 200-year tradition of waking the city at sunrise with drums and chants. Along Jackson Avenue, families and friends lined the streets, sporting Mardi Gras purple, gold, and green, as the Krewe of Zulu parade began. However, due to weather concerns, parade routes were shortened, and some events were postponed to Sunday.
New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick warned that worsening conditions could lead to last-minute cancellations. Meanwhile, enhanced security measures—including barriers, SWAT teams, and helicopters—were in place following a tragic January 1st truck attack.
Despite adjustments, Mardi Gras remained a vibrant spectacle, blending African American traditions, street parties, and historical parades—a testament to New Orleans’ enduring spirit.
