New Legislation Could Assist Parents Of Remote Learning Children

Written by on November 1, 2020

New York State Assembly workers are introducing a new piece of legislation that aims to assist working parents who’s children are remote learning.

“This would be aligned with the current paid family law. Parents would be able to take up to 12 weeks of paid leave, which is about two-thirds of the wage you have,” said Assemblymember Michaelle Solages, who sponsors the bill from the 22nd Assembly District.

The bill will help parents like Kanika Moxley, who’s 5th grade son, Jahnarie Ross-Simmons has had a rough time with online learning due to his learning disability

Moxley is considering putting her nursing career on the back burner so she can make sure her son is getting the education he needs.

“My kids come first. I get emotional when I think about it because I’m a caretaker and I’m caring for other people. Now, I’m in a boat where with my sons’ education, this is something I can’t take that risk of not overseeing it again and trying to save him,” said Moxley.

The bill would provide financial help for parents like Moxley, who needs to keep her son in school.

“The way I envision it right now is that my son is drowning and I need to throw the lifeline out to try to reel him to safety,” said Moxley.

The bill will be voted on in the near future, sometime after election day.
