New Jersey Adds ‘X’ Gender Marker to Driver’s Licenses

Written by on April 21, 2021

New Jersey just joined 19 other states and Washington D.C. in having an ‘X’ gender option for driver’s licenses and other state documents.  Gender ‘X’ refers to those that identify as nonbinary, or if they do not identify as either male or female.  This new legislation is a big step for individuals who are nonbinary.

New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) Chief Administrator, Sue Fulton, states, “Diversity and inclusion are core values for New Jersey, and for all of us at the MVC.  We know this new option will be deeply impactful for many residents, as access to resources and the ability to live and work freely so often hinges on having documentation that correctly reflects your identity.”
