New Budget Breakdown Shows New Yorkers Paying 65 cents/gallon in “gas taxes”

As the gas prices continue to rise, the national average for a gallon of regular Thursday, March 10th sits at $4.34. While we hope to see a decrease soon, Governor Kathy Hochul is on the fence about whether to cut the New York State “gas tax.” Governor Houchl stated: “It could go up to 6 dollars a gallon, is what we’re hearing today. I don’t have any way to guarantee that the savings from not having to pay 10 cents or 18 cents or 20 cents per gallon is going to end up in the consumer’s pockets if it’s going to be absorbed in those new increases, so I’m being very thoughtful about this.”
According to the New York State Division of the Budget, when you combine the local, state, and federal tax, upstate New Yorkers are paying approximately 65.7 cents per gallon in gas taxes. According to the Governor’s office, freezing the taxes does not guarantee a lower cost.
