Nebraska Supreme Court clears the way for people with felony convictions to vote
Written by Site Hub on October 19, 2024
The Nebraska Supreme Court has ruled in favor of allowing individuals with felony convictions to vote after completing their sentences, overturning a directive by Secretary of State Robert Evnen that sought to block this right. The decision upholds Legislative Bill 20 (LB 20), which eliminated a two-year waiting period previously required for former felons to regain their voting rights. This ruling comes just before the state’s voter registration deadline for the 2024 general election. The court found Evnen’s actions to be unconstitutional, and he has agreed to comply with the ruling. Advocates, including the ACLU, view the decision as a major victory for voting rights in Nebraska, enabling thousands of formerly incarcerated individuals to vote in the upcoming election.
