National Lifeguard Shortage Impacts Rochester Summer

Written by on June 2, 2022

As the warm days approach us, many are concerned about the nationwide shortage of lifeguards that could prevent about a third of the country’s pools and beaches to close this summer. Rochester is still working on recruitment before public swimming spaces open on July 5th, where the city needs to hire 25 to 30 lifeguards to be fully staffed the same as last year.

City of Rochester Athletic Director Eric Rose stated: “Including the beach, we look to open two or three additional sites this summer. Once again, it’s all depending on the lifeguards and how many we can get hired, trained, and certified before our opening date…We are recruiting, recruiting, recruiting. We had an opportunity to go to schools this year, talk to swim teams, talk to coaches, parents, and swimmers everywhere. We are continuing to recruit all the way until the pools open for us this summer.”
