According to a 2015 study, unsafe sleeping conditions is the leading killer among healthy infants in Monroe County. To be exact, unsafe sleeping conditions have caused an average of 10 infant fatalities each year.
Due to this, the county has been working with the Baby Safe Sleep Coalition to help decrease these preventable fatalities. So far, the county has distributed more than 36,000 informational kits to educate parents on this issue and to provide tips for safer sleeping conditions.
In addition, the safe sleep practices group, Cribs for Kids, has officially given all hospitals in Monroe county “Gold” certification when it comes to practicing safe sleeping conditions for infants. The Department of Human Services also plans to contribute $150,000 to the safe sleep cause.
