There are major developments in the case seeking justice for George Floyd who was killed by Minneapolis Police in May 2020.
Former MPD Officer Derrick Chauvin is now facing manslaughter, 2nd degree AND 3rd degree murder charges.
Judge Cahill reinstated the 3rd degree charge that was once deemed “unwarranted”. Prosecutors argue that it gives the jurors additional options when deciding to convict Chauvin for pressing his knee into the neck of the man suspected of using a fake $20 in a local store.
Suspects charged with 2nd degree murder often get acquitted due to the burden of proof of intent to kill. Many people agree that there is a greater probability of convicting Chauvin on the 3rd degree murder charge in this case.
On Friday the city of Minneapolis stuck a deal to pay George Floyd’s family a historic $27 million settlement in a civil suit. That’s $7 million more than the family of an unarmed white woman received after she was shot by an officer after MPD was called to investigate potential crime behind her house in 2019.
The $27 million settlement for Floyd includes $500,000 to rebuild the business district where George died on May 25 2020.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump said the settlement is the largest pre-trial settlement ever, which sends a powerful message that Black lives do matter!
Mayor Frey tweeted that the settlement reflects a shared commitment to advancing racial justice and a sustained push for progress.
The past year has dramatically shifted our city’s trajectory, and today marks another milestone in shaping a more just future for Minneapolis. Our settlement with George Floyd’s family reflects a shared commitment to advancing racial justice and a sustained push for progress.
