Yesterday, Mayor Lovely Warren, joined by Rochester City Council Vice President Willie Lightfoot and other supporters, declared June 4 as ‘Gun Violence Awareness Day on the steps of City Hall in Rochester. Willie Lightfoot informed that the community needs to raise awareness about the public health crisis of gun violence; “We have to deal with the root of the problem. Let’s be real. We have to track where these guns are coming from. That is the number one priority for the Roc Against Gun Violence Coalition this year.”

Over the past two days, there were four shootings on Thursday, and less than four hours after holding this event, a man was shot and killed on Weld Street. These ‘Stop the Violence’ rallies are planned in the city for today. One will begin at the David Gantt Recreation Center at 11 a.m, another will begin at Thurston Rd. & Brooks Avenue at 9:30 a.m.
