After Rochester’s City Hall closed because of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, many couples were forced to put their wedding plans on hold to stay safe. Over the weekend, the City Clerk’s Office revealed that it has transitioned to online processes for marriage licenses and ceremony services. Governor Andrew Cuomo gave the City Clerk the authority to update standard practices to meet demand during these uncertain times.
Couples can apply for a license online by following instructions here. They must upload supporting documentation. Payment can be made with a credit or debit card that features the Visa or Mastercard logo. A member of the Clerk’s Licensing department will then contact the couple via Zoom to confirm the application details. Couples who already have a license that was supposed to expire on or after March 16, 2020 must use it within 60 days of the original issuance date.
Those who wish to have a virtual civil wedding ceremony can submit the request online here. A City Clerk’s Office staff member will contact them to confirm a date and time. The fee must be paid with a credit or debit card. The City Clerk or Deputy City Clerk will perform the ceremony via Zoom. The couple and witnesses must be 18 or older and currently live within the city limits.
Rochester residents who have additional questions about these new virtual marriage-related services can request more information from the Licensing department. The phone number is (585) 428-6617.
