Local Doctor Warns of Snow Blower Injuries

Written by on February 5, 2022

It seems like this snow is nonstop, and if you’re looking to take out your snowblower, a local doctor warns of injuries. Dr. Danielle Wilbur, a hand surgeon at the University of Rochester Medical Center, warns that many snow blow accidents happen when wet, heavy snow clogs the chute. A common mistake people make is turning the snowblower off and sticking their hand into the chute to unclog it, but that is when the blades can spin again.

Dr. Wilbur stated: “A split-second to clear it out can alter your life in many ways. If you’re a manual laborer, you lose grip strength. Even keyboarding will be difficult. Typing is difficult. You’re losing a fingertip. So it’s something that can affect people in the sedentary type of jobs all the way through manual labor type of jobs. It takes weeks to months to recover from this and you may never fully recover.”

Stay safe, and use a clean-out tool for your snowblower!
