Jeopardy’s official twitter account broke the news on Sunday that its long-time host, Alex Trebek passed away.
“Jeopardy! is saddened to share that Alex Trebek passed away peacefully at home early this morning, surrounded by family and friends on Sunday. Thank you, Alex.”
He was 80 years old when he succumbed to stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
Trebek hosted over 8,000 episodes of the syndicated game show series, which is the world record, according to Sony Pictures.
Mike Richards, the show’s producer said:
“He loved that ‘Jeopardy!’ popularized intelligence and it was important for him. I think he really became synonymous with the show, in that he really was that smart. Trebek reveled in these intelligent people, in the contestants, in the writers,”
“It’s just who he was — he craved knowledge,” Richards said. “And it showed.”
