Jackie Ortiz Denied Appointment To Monroe County Board Of Elections

Written by on August 12, 2020

What is going on with the Democratic party here in Monroe County? The divisiveness is rampant but the question is why?

Jackie Ortiz was selected by her party to serve as the Democratic Commissioner for the Monroe County Board of Elections. However, some members of the legislature didn’t appoint her to the position Tuesday night during the meeting.

There are different reasons why they did not appoint Ortiz. One member said they found fault with the process, another member blamed a court order.

Without a unanimous vote, Republicans would not back Ortiz either. You have one Democratic Commissioner and one Republican Commissioner that run the Monroe County Board of Elections. They also facilitate voting for in Monroe County for all offices including the Presidential Elections.

Ortiz said delaying her appointment devalues voting.

Here is the full statement from Jackie Ortiz.

“It is unfortunate that the voices of Democratic Committee members and their decision is not being honored. 86% of Democratic Committee members supported my candidacy and tonight’s decision to delay my appointment signals a devaluing of such vote.  This delay tactic and undermining effort continues to push out the timeframe for the people’s work to get done.  I am fully prepared to work hard and do what is necessary to ensure we are equipped for November. Voters deserve a smooth process absent the bumps in the road experienced during the primary and for the sake of the voters it is time to move ahead.”
