If Cuomo Leaves Office, Lt. Gov Kathy Hochul is Next to Make History

The number of legislators and government officials, including President Biden, continues to grow on the call of resignation on Governor Andrew Cuomo after a state attorney general report detailed almost a dozen allegations of sexual harassment against the governor. While Cuomo continuously denies these claims, many lawmakers are vocally supporting an impeachment process to remove the long-term governor from office. If Cuomo is removed from office, New York Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul would be next in line and would become New York’s first woman governor.
NY Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul took to Twitter to make her statement on the situation. Hochul believes the women who spoke out against Cuomo and called his behavior “repulsive” and “unlawful,” and that the New York State Assembly will determine the next steps.
No one is above the law. Under the New York Constitution, the Assembly will now determine the next steps.
Because Lieutenant Governors stand next in the line of succession, it would not be appropriate to comment further on the process at this moment. 2/2
