‘I Fear for them’: Families in 19th Ward Scared for Loved Ones as Violence Increases

Written by on June 22, 2021

So far this year, Rochester has seen 30 homicides and some areas have been hit harder than others.

Just in the month of June, Genesee Street in the 19th Ward Neighborhood, has seen three horrific homicides.

Rochester First reported:

  • On June 12: An 18-year-old and 14-year-old were shot on Genesee Street during broad daylight. The 18-year-old, Christopher Wood, died.
  • On June 16: A 22-year-old was fatally shot on Genesee Street.
  • In the early hours of Monday morning on June 21, a man in his 30s was fatally stabbed.

A mother in the community, Kristie Ruff, talks to reporters and expresses deep fear for her family. She stated:

“I have young men of my own and they are 20 and 22, and when they go out, I fear for them. Even though they are not of the violence, they don’t do the stuff out there, I fear for them. The other night I walked my 22-year-old outside just to get in his car because I don’t want no one to mistake him for someone else and just shoot him.”
