Written by on September 4, 2024

A human case of West Nile virus has been confirmed in Wayne County, with the infected individual currently hospitalized and receiving treatment, according to Wayne County Public Health officials. The virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito and has been responsible for at least five deaths in the region this summer. Health officials are urging residents to take precautions, such as using mosquito repellent and wearing long clothing when outdoors. In addition to the West Nile virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), another mosquito-borne disease, was detected in horses in Galen, Wayne County, last week. Both viruses highlight the need for heightened awareness and preventive measures during mosquito season.
