Back in 2017, a lawsuit was filed against the Texas Association of School Boards after Benjie Arnold, a 12th-grade sociology teacher at Klein Oak High School student, bullied a student for not standing for the pledge of allegiance. According to the student who filed the suit, she is nonreligious and was discriminated against and harassed by several teachers after she didn’t say the pledge out of objection to the words “Under God” and her belief that “liberty and justice for all” are not guaranteed for people of color in the United States. Instead of a trial, Arnold agreed to a $90,000 settlement. According to the Courthouse News Service, Arnold is still a teacher at Klein Oak High School.
