Houston High School Enacts Controversial Dress Code

Written by on April 26, 2019

James Madison High School in Houston, Texas is facing backlash after issuing a new dress code for parents of students. In a letter to parents sent on April 9, 2019, the school listed an array of clothing items that would not be permitted on campus such as,

  • “A satin cap or bonnet on their head”
  • “Hair rollers”
  • “Pajamas of any kind”
  • “Leggings that are showing your bottom and where your body is not covered from the front or the back”
  • “Sagging pants”
  • “Men wearing undershirts”
  • “Daisy Dukes”

Principal of James Madison High, Carlotta Outley Brown stated that the parental dress code was put into place in order to help “professional educational environment.” Many teachers and parents however are fighting the new policy, calling it “dismissive, elitist, or belittling.”

President of the Houston Federation of Teachers Zeph Capo, was quoted saying, “I’m sorry – this principal may have plenty of money and time to go to the hairdresser weekly and have her stuff done. Having a wrap on your head is not offensive. It should not be controversial.”
