Greece police install license plate recognition cameras across town

The Greece Police Department has installed license plate recognition (LPR) cameras across the town, with plans to add more soon. Mounted on electrical poles, these cameras use optical character recognition to capture and identify license plates, uploading the data into a database. This system helps police match vehicles to those reported stolen, linked to missing persons, or connected to crimes.
Since the initial installations in October, the cameras have proven effective, assisting in the recovery of stolen vehicles and multiple apprehensions, particularly around the Greece Ridge Mall. Police Chief Michael Wood highlighted the technology’s value for public safety, despite some residents expressing privacy concerns. Chief Wood assured the community that the cameras are solely intended to enhance safety and law enforcement effectiveness.
Approximately 50 cameras will be operational after installation, funded by the New York State Law Enforcement Technology Grant. Any remaining funds may be used to expand the department’s drone program. Residents with questions or concerns about the cameras are encouraged to contact the Greece Police Department directly.
