Governor Hochul Launches Executive Action to Tackle Housing Crisis

Written by on July 21, 2023

An executive action announced by Governor Kathy Hochul hopes to help address the housing crisis. Gov. Hochul said too much time will be wasted if the state waits until next year’s session to address the issue: “New Yorkers need houses built now. We’re going to start driving down the cost because guess what, it is basic supply and demand — you build more housing, the prices drop.”

The executive action:

  • Introduces $650 million dollars in discretionary funding to certified pro-housing communities
  • Creates programs to help advance Gowanus projects in 421-A Reviews of state-owned sites for potential housing such as vacant prisons for potential housing

All will be monitored through a public dashboard showing challenges and growth.
