Governor Cuomo reminds New Yorkers that wearing masks is mandatory

Written by on May 24, 2020

Governor Andrew Cuomo started off the holiday weekend by reminding everyone of the importance of wearing face masks. His statement was designed to both emphasize the need during the holiday and also serve as a general reminder.

New York state is still in the process of entering various re-opening phases. Since the Rochester and Finger Lakes regions are among the first to re-open, Governor Cuomo reminded everyone that now is not the time to become lax when socially active.

He started by comparing the current necessity of wearing masks to help slow the spread of SARS-CoV-2 to the necessity of using condoms to slow the spread of HIV during the 1980’s AIDs crisis. Face masks have been mandatory in New York since mid-April in any situation when someone can’t remain socially distant when interacting with others.

Governor Cuomo then explained people’s rights and responsibilities: “The mask is mandatory. It’s not just a nice thing to do or civic duty. It is mandatory that you wear the mask within six feet of another person. You don’t have the right to infect another person. The mask can make a difference between life or death.”

He followed this statement by repeating the phrase “You don’t have a right to infect another person, you don’t.” and then referred to people’s rights as outlined in the Constitution: “Tell me where it says you have the right to infect another person. You don’t.”
