Giraffe feeding program returns at Seneca Park Zoo

Written by on May 24, 2024

Seneca Park Zoo‘s giraffe feeding program returns from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, allowing visitors to hand-feed Masai giraffes at the Animals of the Savanna exhibit. This year’s announcement highlights Kipenzi, an adult female giraffe, who has exceeded expectations by surviving 14 months with an inoperable malignant tumor on her jaw. Despite the tumor, Kipenzi’s teeth remain unaffected, and she continues to eat normally and maintain her weight. However, the tumor will eventually impact her ability to eat.

Starting May 24, feedings will occur at 11:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. from Thursday to Monday. Tickets, priced at $5, are limited and sold on the day of the feeding at the Savanna Outpost. Children aged 3 to 11 require their own tickets and must be accompanied by ticketed adults; children under 3 are not allowed on the feeding deck. The zoo, located at 2222 St. Paul St., is home to five Masai giraffes: Kipenzi, Iggi, Pippi, Olmsted (Olmy), and JD. Visitors are encouraged to spend time with Kipenzi while she participates in the feeding program.
