George Eastman Museum Receives $65,000 Grant For Film Restoration

The National Film Preservation Foundation has awarded The George Eastman Museum $65,000 to assist in its restoration and preservation of three severely damaged nitrate films, which are believed to be the last copies of their titles.

The prints of His Last Race (US 1923), Payroll Pirates (US 1920), and When Betty Bets (US 1917) are likely the only versions of the films that still exist. They are in such rough shape that sending them to the Cinema Arts Laboratory in Newfoundland, PA and at EastmanFilm Preservation Services in Rochester.

The labs will scan the nitrate film and use that to create a 35mm negative, 35mm print and a DCP version of each of the films.

After the scans are complete, each movie will be available in 35mm and digital for research and public screenings at the museum.
