Fisher Students Publish Bilingual Book for Rochester Schools

Written by on November 23, 2024

St. John Fisher University juniors Marissa Terech and Emma Muchow have turned a class project into an inspiring bilingual children’s book, Mia La Cerdita. Written in English and Spanish, the book aims to promote literacy and cultural connection in Rochester City School District (RCSD) classrooms.

Starting with bilingual poems for a class assignment, Terech partnered with her roommate Muchow, who illustrated the stories, to bring the project to life. With support from the Rochester Education Foundation, the duo has distributed 200 copies to RCSD Schools No. 12 and No. 28, as well as to elementary libraries across the district.

Sharing their book in classrooms has been a heartfelt experience for the authors, who cherish connecting with bilingual students in their first language. Through their brand, “Pigtales and Poemas with Mia La Cerdita,” they’ve also launched a website featuring merchandise inspired by their work.

The book, designed to empower and inspire young readers, is available on Amazon for anyone looking to share this meaningful story with students or loved ones.
