Surgeons Perform first penis transplant in the United States

On May 8th, Thomas Manning, 64, underwent the first penile transplant in the United States. The 15 hour procedure took place at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Manning had his penis amputated due to a rare form of genital cancer, but had enough penial tissue remaining to qualify for a successful transplant.

Manning is quoted saying, “I want to go back to being who I was,” and doctors are optimistic about his recovery. If everything goes according to plan, Manning should be able to urinate within a few weeks, and perform sexual activities within a few months.

This procedure is the first in the United States, but has been done twice before (one failed in China, one successful in South Africa).

Manning is looking forward to having a normal love life again.
