First Confirmed Case Of COVID-19 Reinfection In The U.S.

Written by on August 29, 2020

Yesterday, doctors in Nevada confirmed the first case of coronavirus reinfection in the U.S.

The 25 year old man got sick in March, recovered and tested negative twice. 48 days after the first diagnosis, he started showing symptoms again. After testing positive for the virus, doctors did more research and found that he had contracted a different strain this time.

Medical officials are saying that even though this is significant, it is still an extremely rare case. So far, this is the first case so that puts the odds of catching it twice at 1 in 6 million.

Dr. Mark Pandori, the director of the Nevada State Public Health Laboratory and co author of the study, was interviewed by ABC and said:

“Having had it doesn’t mean you can’t get it again, that’s what this shows. It tells us possibly things we still don’t know about this virus … or that there is a danger that even if you’ve had it that your immune system may not protect you from a significant illness next time.”
