It looks like Elon Musk and Twitter have reached a deal in which it would hand the world’s richest man control of a social network that has far-reaching influence on politics and society. If you haven’t been following the story, Musk has been buying shares of Twitter since January, in hopes to purchase the company in its entirety. Now, Musk will pay about $44 billion, or $54.20 a share, to take the social media company private.
According to Musk, he plans to “unlock” Twitter’s potential by loosening what he sees as “unfair restrictions” on free speech. Musk stated: “Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated…I hope that even my worst critics remain on Twitter because that is what free speech means.”
