Different Intentions In Conversations Lead To Different Perceptions

Written by on March 15, 2023

When you have a discussion with someone or are arguing do you listen to defend your point or do you listen to understand?

A lot of problems in a relationship and that is any relationship when you are talking with someone listening is very important. It’s important because you could hear more than one version of what the other person is trying to express depending on how you are listening.

If you are listening to defend yourself then your perception of the situation will be from that standpoint. You are missing key points of what the other person is saying and feeling and that could make things a lot worse and escalate into something that doesn’t have to be.

When you listen to understand the person you are talking with you will get a more expanded view of what they are felling and thinking. This will help in a more effective way with coming up with solutions or an agreement to disagree. Either way everyone involved walks away with a healthier understanding and a feeling a mutual respect of each persons individuality, thoughts, opinions, and ideas.
