Judge Peter Cahill has sentenced Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was sentenced Friday to 270 months — 22.5 years— in prison for killing George Floyd. Judge Cahill stated the sentence was based solely on legal facts only. Judge Cahill agreed with prosecutors that Derek Chauvin acted with cruelty when he killed George Floyd, abused his position of power as a police officer, and committed the crime in front of children.
Rodney Floyd, one of George Floyd’s brothers, called Chauvin’s sentence a “slap on the wrist.” The punishment is well below the 30 years prosecutors and Floyd’s family had requested, and with good behavior, Chauvin could be released on parole after serving two-thirds of his sentence or about 15 years. Floyd’s brother continued by stating; “We’ve suffered a life sentence for not having him in our life, and that hurts me to death.”
