DEC warns of Asian Longhorned Beetles

Written by on July 28, 2024

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has issued a warning about the invasive Asian Longhorned Beetle, which poses a significant threat to hardwood trees, especially maples. Jessica Cancelliere, a research scientist with the DEC, explains that while the beetle does not harm humans, it can kill trees over time. The beetle’s larvae tunnel through the tree’s tissues, disrupting the flow of nutrients and eventually causing the tree’s death. Identifying the beetle is relatively easy, but people are more likely to notice tree damage, such as large, round exit holes left by emerging adult beetles.

The DEC encourages reporting any sightings of these exit holes to prevent further spread. The beetle can also be spread through firewood, prompting regulations in New York State to limit the movement of untreated firewood over long distances. For more information on the Asian Longhorned Beetle or to report an area of concern, individuals are encouraged to contact the DEC.
