DEC Study Shows Lake Ontario’s Water Quality Is Improving

The Rochester Embayment is a section of the south shore of Lake Ontario at the mouth of the Genesee River. It’s about a 35 square mile portion of Lake Ontario between Nine Mile Point in the Town of Webster and Bogus Point in the Town of Parma.

Back in 1987, it was designated an area of concern under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement because up until that time, there weren’t strict enough laws that prevented manufacturing facilities from contaminating the water in that area.

The Department of Environmental Conservation just announced that the water in that area is becoming much cleaner. Since 1987, there were laws saying fishermen could only take one catch home a month because of high levels of toxins in the blood of the fish, but studies show that the levels have dropped considerably.
