DEC challenge encourages New Yorkers to birdwatch

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has launched the “I Bird NY” Challenge to encourage residents to engage in birdwatching. Participants are tasked with identifying and logging ten different species of New York’s 450 native birds. These sightings can occur in various settings, such as backyards, local parks, or any of the state’s over 350 Birding Trails. Entries for the challenge, which runs until November 1, can be submitted via mail, email, or an online form provided by the DEC. Early spring is noted as an optimal time for birdwatching due to the birds’ active behaviors like territory establishment and mating. Completers of the challenge will receive a commemorative patch, a certificate, and may win birding equipment, with special draws for both youth and adult participants. Additional entries can be earned by submitting a photo with the bird log. The DEC also offers a guide to common birds and a free beginner’s birdwatching guide on their website to assist newcomers.
