DEC Announces Burn Ban Starting March 16

Written by on March 5, 2024

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has implemented an annual brush burning ban from March 16 to May 14, as announced by Commissioner Basil Seggos. This preventive measure, enacted yearly since 2009, aims to mitigate wildfire risks and reduce air pollution, particularly noting the heightened fire danger following an unusually dry winter. The absence of snowpack accelerates the drying of potential fuel sources, increasing the susceptibility to fires. The ban has historically led to a significant decrease in spring fires, with a reported 43% reduction in the state. During the ban, residential brush burning is restricted, although certain small fires for cooking or warmth may be permitted under specific conditions. The DEC emphasizes the human-caused nature of most fires during this period and advises against personal attempts to extinguish wildfires, suggesting instead that homeowners focus on safeguarding their properties and leaving firefighting to professionals. Violations of the burn ban can result in substantial fines, and the DEC provides resources for reporting illegal activities and obtaining fire danger information.
