Written by on December 7, 2020

Vicki Johnson has been hired by the Dallas Wings to be their new head coach, making her the first and only Black woman currently holding the title in the entire WNBA, which is made up of 70% Black players.

The turnaround comes after coach Brian Agler couldn’t take the Wings to the playoffs last season with their 8-14 record.

Before coaching the Wings, Johnson was an assistant coach with the Las Vegas Aces. With her guidance, the team was able to make it to the 2020 WNBA Finals, where the eventually lost to the Seattle Storm.

Additionally, Johnson was an assistant coach for the San Antonio Stars from 2011-2016 and became head coach in 2017. The stars then relocated to Las Vegas and she was demoted when the team went 8 – 26.
