D.C. Mayor renames 16th street to “Black Lives Matter Plaza”

16th street in Washington D.C. has now been renamed “Black Lives Matter Plaza”. The pavement there has a rich history as a prominent location for protests and demonstrations that have made major impacts on American History.

It will now also honor the protestors and the victims who have suffered at the hands of police brutality and white supremacy.

Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s Chief of Staff John Falcicchio tweeted:

“Mayor Bowser wanted to make it abundantly clear that this is DC’s street and to honor demonstrators who (were) peacefully protesting on Monday evening.”

Furthermore, the mayor had the phrase Black Lives Matter painted onto the street, mainly on the section that leads up to the White House.

While many see this as a gesture of goodwill, others -including the D.C. chapter of Black Lives Matter – see it only as a symbolic act.
The chapter released a statement, tweeting:

“This is a performative distraction from real policy changes. Bowser has consistently been on the wrong side of BLMDC history. This is to appease white liberals while ignoring our demands. Black Lives Matter means defund the police…”
