On Wednesday, June 17th, 2020, New York State Governor Andrew M. Cuomo said he would sign an executive order that would make Juneteenth a holiday for state employees.
Juneteenth is a combination of the month June and nineteenth for the date. It commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, which occurred on June 19, 1865. This represents the date slaves realized their emancipation in American society.
During a briefing with reporters, Cuomo stated, “It is a day we should all reflect upon. It’s a day that is especially relevant at this moment in history”. He added, “I’m going to propose legislation for next year making it an official state holiday”.
