Written by on July 16, 2024

In the first episode of “Honoring My Enslaved Ancestors,” Code Switch co-host B.A. Parker explores her family’s history at Somerset Plantation in Creswell, North Carolina. Despite passing the site every summer, Parker had avoided visiting it for years. Following the death of her Grandma Doris, Parker grapples with how to honor her enslaved ancestors’ legacy. She attends a symposium at the National Museum of African American History and Culture for descendants of slavery who are connected to culturally significant historic places. There, she meets others facing similar questions and reflects on what kind of descendant she wants to be. Listen to this powerful episode and join Parker’s journey of discovery and reflection.
