Changes Come To Rochester Police Department Chokehold Banned Unless Extreme Circumstance

Written by on March 17, 2021

A big announcement today from the Rochester Police Department. The RPD is banning its officers from using chokeholds unless there is an extreme circumstance. The situations considered extreme would be where “deadly physical force is authorized”.

Some of the other changes announced on Monday are updated guidances on the officers’ duty to use excessive force when intervening in a case. This means if the situation can be handled without escalating then officers should not engage in an unreasonable way. If they do then they must report it to a supervisor.

There will be more updates coming soon from the RPD regarding juvenile detention, mental hygiene, and the use of force.
