Chance the Rapper is set to release his highly anticipated album, “Star Line,” later this year. The album is inspired by Marcus Garvey’s Black Star Line steamship corporation and Chance’s transformative trip to Ghana. Chance discussed his unique DIY approach to the music industry, emphasizing accessibility and the potential of AI in helping aspiring artists. At Meta’s “Super Fan” event, he highlighted how AI can provide valuable guidance based on his own journey from performing in public libraries to becoming a Grammy-winning artist.
Reflecting on his time in Ghana, Chance shared how the experience deepened his understanding of Pan-Africanism and inspired the creation of the Black Starlight Festival, which drew 50,000 attendees in January 2023. The festival celebrated the Black Diaspora with performances from notable artists like Vic Mensa, Tobe Nwigwe, T-Pain, Erykah Badu, and Dave Chappelle.
“Star Line” marks Chance’s first album since 2019’s “The Big Day.” He collaborated with various artists, including DJ Premier on the nostalgic track “Together,” and producers Smoko Ono, Dominique Sanders, and Dan Edinberg on “Stars Out.” Fiercely independent, Chance appreciates the freedom to release music on his terms, believing that art gains meaning over time.
