On Saturday, a mural reading dedicated to Black Lives Matter was vandalized by David Nelson and Nicole Anderson.

The mural, which was painted in front of the Wakefield Taylor Courthouse had been approved, but Nelson and Anderson brought paint to the site shortly after it was completed and began to cover it up.

Onlookers saw them and began sharing the act on facebook and other social media platforms.

The recordings went viral and led to the identification of the individuals and their eventual conviction.

Nelson and Anderson are being charged with vandalism under $400, possession of tools to commit vandalism and violation of civil rights.

On Wednesday, Contra Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton issued a statement, saying:

“We must address the root and byproduct of systemic racism in our country. The Black Lives Matter movement is an important civil rights cause that deserves all of our attention. The mural completed last weekend was a peaceful and powerful way to communicate the importance of Black lives in Contra Costa County and the country. We must continue to elevate discussions and actually listen to one another in an effort to heal our community and country.”
