The Buffalo-Rochester-Syracuse tech hub has been awarded a $40 million federal investment to support Upstate New York’s goal of becoming a leading semiconductor center. The “NY SMART I-Corridor Tech Hub” is one of 12 Tech Hub winners nationwide. This funding will be used to enhance workforce training programs at Monroe Community College, close supply chain gaps, support local firms in the semiconductor industry, and help small and minority-owned businesses access commercialization resources.
Senator Chuck Schumer highlighted the significance of this investment, stating it positions Upstate NY as a critical part of America’s semiconductor future. The region’s designation as a Tech Hub in October 2023, selected from hundreds of applicants, underscores its potential to become a globally recognized semiconductor manufacturing hub. This investment follows a $1.5 billion funding boost earlier this year for GlobalFoundries to expand production in New York and Vermont, including a new chip factory in Malta, NY.
