Teaching black facts!
September 15th
One of today’s facts took place right here in Rochester, New York in 1898. The National Afro-American Council was created and led by A.M.E. Zion Bishop Alexander Walters. The first nationwide civil rights organization in the United States that gave blacks the space to discuss important issues directly affecting them. Also, the Council was responsible for teaching some of the most famous civil rights leaders in the country past the early 1900s.
Some of those leaders were Ida B. Wells and Booker T. Washington. The Council’s annual meetings included educators, politicians, journalists, and civil rights leaders. The Council was the nation’s top organization of African Americans at the time. Because of internal friction and low revenue, the Council ended in 1907.
Muhammad Ali vs Leon Spinks became the first black prizefight to bring in more than $5 million in 1978. The fight took place at the Louisianna Superdome in New Orleans. Muhammad Ali won in a unanimous decision becoming the first fighter to win the heavyweight title three times.
