Biden Pledges To Reopen Schools In 100 Days — Is That Enough Time?

Written by on January 21, 2021

After his inauguration ceremony yesterday, President Joe Biden got right to work, signing executive orders that will help the country get back on its feet.

In addition to the new executive orders, he pledged to reopen most K-12 schools within 100 days. While teachers are enthusiastic about the ambitious measure, it might be a better goal to have rather than a deadline.

One of the executive orders he will be signing on his second day of office will give guidance to the Departments of Education and Health and Human Services on masking, cleaning and testing. A second portion of the order will give schools the opportunity for federal reimbursement when it comes to purchasing PPE and other materials required for the reopening procedure.

Carole Johnson, Biden’s Covid testing coordinator, gave a statement that seemed to echo the concerns of extending the 100 days:

“The health and safety of students, educators, staff and families is paramount. The administration will always be honest about the challenges we face, including addressing how and whether changes in the pandemic may impact the reopening of schools or the ability of schools to reopen,” Johnson said.
