BHenny’s Review on Rihanna’s New Single Work

Written by on January 28, 2016

It’s been quite some time since we’ve heard anything new from Rhi-Rhi. Actually, let me clarify. It’s been a while since we’ve heard any new MUSIC from Rhi-Rhi. She’s been in the news, quite a bit, over the past couple of years, mainly for her romantic escapades. Not that there’s anything wrong with her romantic escapades. She’s grown and I’m not here to judge. True to form, Rhianna’s latest single deals with a relationship of sorts; something familiar to many, where the woman wants a relationship and the man (played by Drake) just wants something physical.

That seems to be a theme between Drake and Rhianna. If this were a video review, this is where a meme of Keenan Ivory Waynes would pop up and say “MESSAGE”!!message All that aside, the song has a very late 90’s-early 2000’s reggae feel to it. As soon as it comes on, I feel like I should be in someone’s basement doing the heel-toe (translate that to dutty-wine if you’re not old enough to get into the “grown folks club”). Rhianna pays homage to her Island roots and I ain’t mad about that one bit. The beat is infectious and the hook is catchy. Knowing that Drake was on the track, I got a little bit of twinge down in my spirit, expecting that he would go in on his verse. After all, he just came off of a beef with one of the hottest rappers in the game’s…boyfriend. Unfortunately, that was not at all the case. I kind of feel like the song would be better without him. His ad-libs didn’t get my hyped, which was extremely appropriate because his verse was lackluster. It stayed on topic, but think of it like reading a book report from a 3rd grader. Sure, it’ll get you the information you need, but it ain’t winning no Pulitzer prize. And at the end of the day, music is supposed to make you feel. This makes me feel…disappointed. I’m not asking for decade ago Drake. Heck, give me last summer Drake. Give me earlier in the winter Drake. Let’s get a team of whack rappers to come at him again and then, re-record this song. Then, I’ll be satisfied. All in all, I love the song, but, not because Drake added anything to it. As a Drake fan, that hurts to say. Despite that, Rhi-Rhi still knows how to make a hit. If you haven’t heard it yet, it’s right here on WDKX.com. Rhi-Rhi fan or not, put this one in your playlist.
