Barry Jenkins Explains His New Limited Series ‘The Underground Railroad’

Over the weekend, Barry Jenkins’ limited series The Underground Railroad became available on Amazon Prime. The Academy Award-winning director paid attention to the buzz about the continuum of Black trauma in the form of TV and film, and the stirred critiques on social media that came with it as well. Jenkins’ response to those who are critiquing his adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel as a beautifully traumatic TV series was simple; “I’m not saying anybody has to watch and I’m not saying folks shouldn’t be tired. I think when people say that I hear them.”
Barry Jenkins also wanted it to be known that sticking to the facts of Black American history was at the forefront of filming in the deep south of Savannah, Georgia. Here is the trailer for The Underground Railroad:
