Aaliyah’s Discography Might Be Available To Stream In The Near Future

Written by on August 26, 2020

An official from Aaliyah’s estate has announced that they have been considering releasing her music to streaming services in the near future.

The main reason her musical catalogue isn’t available is due to the confusion on who actually owns the rights to her songs. All three of her double platinum albums were on Blackground Records, founded by father and son team Barry and Jomo Hankerson.

In addition to this, each album’s distributing rights went through different labels. “Age Ain’t Nothin’ But a Number” is on Kelly’s former label Jive, “One in a Million” was distributed by Atlantic and the self-titled 2001 album by Virgin, that’s now owned by Universal.

Blackground Records hasn’t released anything since 2013 and has faced several lawsuits over the past few years.

In spite of all this legal confusion, the Estate of Aaliyah Haughton tweeted a message to her fans, saying:

“To our loyal fans: We are excited to announce that communication has commenced between the estate and various record labels about the status of Aaliyah’s music catalogue, as well as its availability on streaming platforms in the near future. Thank you for your continued love and support. More updates to come!”
