Mayor-elect Malik Evans Take on City Challenges

Yesterday, current Mayor Lovely Warren issued a state of emergency, calling on the state and other law enforcement agencies to help Rochester’s historic number of homicides. Mayor-elect Malik Evans believes Rochester’s state of emergency is a short-term solution. When Evans takes office on January 1st, he plans on making violence in the city one of his main focuses.

When addressing the people of Rochester, Evans said: “The state emergency is one tool, but we have to use all the tools in the toolbox to bring down this high homicide number…There is not one thing that’s going to solve this complex problem that we have. It has to involve the entire community. It has to involve the relationships with the police and citizens working together to solve crimes as they take place and more importantly, we have to make sure we’re giving people mental health services, to make sure if they feel as though they are so angry they want to take someone’s life, that they are given tools to not go down that route.”
