Yesterday, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the Gender Recognition Act into law, after the state Legislature approved it earlier this month. This new law cleared the way for the DMV to offer the “X” designation to those who do not identify as strictly male or female. The Gender Recognition Act also makes it easier for transgender individuals to change their names without discrimination, removing a requirement that required them to print their address and name in the newspaper while creating a new process in which they can petition a court and have it sealed.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo commented on the act yesterday at a conference, stating; “Gender Recognition is the next step forward. The Gender Recognition Act eliminates barriers that undermine the health, safety, and equality of people because of their gender. It affirms basic human dignity.” The law will go into effect in 180 days.
