Annual ‘Freedom Festival’ held to Honor the Legacy of Frederick Douglass

Written by on June 10, 2021

Yesterday, for the first time ever, the annual ‘Freedom Festival’ event was held at the memorial’s new site, at Frederick Douglass Plaza near the corner of South Avenue and Robinson Drive. Previously, the Frederick Douglass monument had been located closer to the Highland Bowl amphitheater. This festival takes place to honor the legacy of Fredrick Douglass, as well as to mark the first unveiling of the Frederick Douglass monument in Rochester in 1899.

At the ceremony, Mayor Lovely Warren stated; “We can never, ever give enough honor and gratitude to the memory of one of Rochester’s most notable citizens, the great Frederick Douglass. His courage and bravery, his eloquence and statesmanship, his dedication and commitment to eradicating slavery, the adoption of equal rights for women, and his plight for fair and equal treatment of every human being will remain in our hearts for generation to generation.”
